The George Inn 13th of February 2009

History
This is a new location for us and we are pleased to announce this investigation as we step back in time to investigate the odd happenings at the George Hotel Inn, Bewdley.

The earliest reference to the George is 1609 at the time the George inn was officially known as St George Inn,
after the patron Saint of England. The Saint part of the name was officially dropped in the early part of the 18th century.

The George exists today, providing food and accommodation as it did in 1609 and was continuing to do so when
William Clare died there in 1668. The George was surrendered at his death to Thomas Burlton
who was in possession of the inn until his death in 1706.

He was responsible for building the second stage of the George; this took the total number of rooms up to 17, nine of which were situated on the upper stories. When Thomas Burlton senior died in 1706 the George passed to his son Thomas and wife Mary, but Thomas died in 1709 and he having no children, the inn passed first to his mother (widow of Thomas Burlton senior) in 1709 then in 1710 to his brother John Burlton and his wife Hannah.

In 1728 it was devised to Hannah, upon her death it passed to Edward, a third brother for john and Hannah had no children.
By 1768 Edward was dead and the George was surrendered to Edward Burlton of Ludlow, who surrendered it to
John Crump in 1777, ending over 100 years of the Burlton's reign at the George.

John Crump was responsible for a third stage of the building, or an alteration to it. This was built before his death in 1791. A fire subsequently devastated the rear, leaving there no trace of the brew house.

It is clear that the George Inn has had its fair share of death and tragedy over the centuries and it is of no surprise that staff don't like to stay there over night, the housekeeper has reported doors being shut that have no physical
way of being shut as they are on two way hinges.

Is the George inn haunted by its past residents or is there a curse that has caused a generation of one family
to die within years of taking over the George?

What will the team find out when we investigate the George Inn Hotel?????
